JONATHAN EYERS

Jonathan is 6’6” and, lacking the coordination to play basketball, trained to be an opera singer instead. He has recently completed his Bachelor of Music (Honours) under Dame Malvina Major at The University of Waikato, where he was a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholar. In 2016, he was named The University of Waikato Creative and Performing Arts Person of the Year at their Blues Awards. Jonathan has performed a number of operatic roles at University and with New Zealand Opera, including his professional debut as ‘Billy’ in their production of Brass Poppies for the 2016 New Zealand and Auckland Arts Festivals, and ‘Belcore’ in their Opera in Schools tour of Elixir of Love. Jonathan also has an impressive concert and oratorio repertoire, performing as a soloist with a number of choirs in Auckland, Hamilton, and Tauranga. Over the last five years, Jonathan has been a member and leader of the NZ Secondary Students’ and NZ Youth Choirs, which has allowed him to travel to five continents, as well as sing with The Rolling Stones. He is also an organist, having been the Organ Scholar at St Peter’s Cathedral, Hamilton for four years, and in 2016 trained as a harpsichordist.
