Bastille Day 2024 - Fête Nationale Française

Bastille Day, France's national holiday celebrated annually on July 14th, is akin to New Zealand's Waitangi Day, marking a pivotal moment in French history.

What is Bastille Day? Known as "Le Quatorze Juillet" or "La Fête Nationale," Bastille Day commemorates the Storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, a key event in the French Revolution that marked the end of monarchy and the dawn of the modern French Republic.

How do the French celebrate?

Fireworks:  Parades:
Cities across France illuminate the sky with dazzling displays, notably near the Eiffel Tower in Paris, drawing crowds of spectators The grandest parade occurs on Paris's Champs-Élysées, featuring military units, tanks, and aircraft, showcasing national unity under the President's watch
Festivities:  Bal des Pompiers (Firemen’s Ball):
Throughout France, people gather for street parties and communal celebrations filled with music, dance, and culinary delights Fire stations host lively public dances, known as the Firemen’s Ball, offering a unique way to join the festivities.
Family Gatherings: Civic Ceremonies:
Families and friends come together for special meals and outdoor barbecues, enjoying the summer weather Official events include speeches, flag ceremonies, and tributes to honor those who fought for French liberty.
